PRC 02 FAI – Rocha da Fajã

trail PRC 02 FAI

Nestled within the protected area for the conservation of habitats and species of Capelinhos, the North Coast, and Varadouro, this route leads through the Fajã da Praia do Norte, which was severely affected by the historic eruption of the Cabeço do Fogo volcano in 1672. The Fajã ends at the fossilized cliffs of Praia do Norte and was a favored location for settlement due to its microclimate, which allowed for the cultivation of grapes, the construction of wine cellars, and summer houses.

The hike begins on the regional road. Follow the trail markers, passing several springs, until you reach a dirt track that descends steeply in places. Continue carefully downhill until you reach the typical vegetation of the Laurissilva forests, such as Azorean heath (Erica azorica) and Azorean picconia (Picconia azorica). A little further on, you can take a detour to a viewpoint overlooking the island's north coast.

Once you reach the bottom, cross the Adão River and follow Rua dos Adegas to Praia do Norte beach, known for its excellent surfing conditions. Continue along the coast, passing a playground, a small reserve of endemic plants, and a picnic area.

From here, the path leads to the center of Praia do Norte, passing the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, built in 1787. We follow the road until we turn left onto a dirt track that leads back up the coast. Upon reaching the road, turn right at the fountain to return to the starting point of the hike.
