This short circular hike begins near the reservoirs above Altares in the highlands.

The landscape offers a constant change of scenery, ranging from avenues of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) and barren alpine pastures to paths winding through managed forests and patches of natural vegetation. From the viewpoint at the highest point of the hiking route (650 m), there is an excellent panoramic view of the north of the island, particularly of the... Picos Vermelhos and the Serra do Narião.

The highlight of this route is Lagoa do Cerro, a wetland of great scenic and biological interest. It is excellent for birdwatching and even has the necessary infrastructure. Wetlands play an important role on various levels, for example in flood control, groundwater recharge, regulation of the water cycle, biomass production, nutrient storage, and mitigation of climate change.

In terms of natural heritage, the hiking trail crosses two protected areas of the nature park. TerceiraA protected area for the management of habitats or species of the central plateau and the northwest coast, as well as a nature reserve, the Serra de Santa Bárbara and the Mistérios Negros. Of particular note are examples of the natural flora such as the blackberry (Rubus hochstetterorum), the woodland cedar (Juniperus brevifolia), the heather (Erica azorica), the peat moss (Sphagnum sp.), Prunus azorica, Ilex azorica and the rare water fern (Isoetes azorica).

Since the hiking trail runs mostly at altitudes above 500 meters, it is advisable to hike it in good weather and with good visibility. Due to the slippery ground conditions, appropriate clothing and footwear are also recommended.
